General Information
The relationship of Colombia with an international actor of the specific significance of the United States of America has been a priority in its foreign policy since 1822, when the latter recognized the new Republic and established a resident diplomatic mission in Bogota, D.C. The Colombian Embassy in the United States is in the city of Washington D.C.
Indeed, Colombia seeks, as a principle in its bilateral relationship with the United States, to maintain a two way dialogue which, in the spirit of the united States political tradition, is fundamental to reach consensus on critical issues, such as integral cooperation in the fight against the world drugs problem, the illegal armed groups which create violence and impunity, and in support of the promotion and protection of human rights and peace initiatives.
Colombia has sought to broaden the scope of its political dialogues and to go more deeply into economic and investment relations with its strategic partners, not forgetting the fundamental nucleus of drugs and security, which have all enabled it to include new spheres of interaction on fundamental items on the bilateral agenda.
