Republic of Korea

Colombia and Korea have forged a close relationship stemming from Colombia’s participation in the Korean War (1950-1953).  Colombia was the only Latin American nation who joined the United Nations army.  Diplomatic relations were formalized in March, 1962.  In 1971 the Republic of Korea set up their Diplomatic mission in Colombia and Colombia in Seoul.

Recent Meetings

  • January, 2011.  During the inauguration of Brazilian President Dilma Roussef, President Juan Manuel Santos and the Prime Minister of South Korea met.  The government of South Korea expressed its support to Colombia to join the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation forum (APEC),  and reiterated its interest in finishing the FTA negotiations during the first half of 2011.
  • April, 2011.  The Vice minister of Knowledge Economy, Mr. Park Young-Jun, visited Colombia on April 28 and 29, 2011.  During his visit, the Second Joint Committee for Oil and Mineral Resources Cooperation was inaugurated, and a Memorandum of Understanding between the Korean Institute of Petroleum Management and the Ministry of Mines and Energy was signed.  
  • June 1 – 3, 2011.  The Vice minister for Strategy and Planning of the Ministry of Defense of Colombia visited Seoul.  Together with Ambassador Cabal, she met with her counterpart and signed a bilateral agreement for the protection of classified military information.
