Africa-South America Summit (ASA)

The I Africa-South America Summit took place in Abuja (Nigeria) from November 26 to 29, 2006. Since then, it has become a regional consensus and coordination forum comprised of 54 African countries and 12 South American countries members of the UNASUR. Only two ASA Summits have been organized so far, the second in Margarita Island, Venezuela, in 2009.

The Summit aims to tightening the bonds of friendship among the peoples and the reinforcement of cooperation for development in consonance with the principles of multi-polarity and observance of political and territorial autonomy. It has thus become the single mechanism to connect both continents, and its development is expected in order to gain greater mutual knowledge and as a means for promoting trade and the establishment of South-South cooperation tools.

The ASA Summit shall focus on the execution of the Africa- South America Strategic Agenda 2010-2015, which encompasses trade, investment and tourism; infrastructure, transport and energy; agriculture and the environment; education and cultural issues; social issues; and science, technology and the media.
