According to the most recent National Study of Water, Colombia's performance in water is six times greater than the world average, and three times the Latin American average. However, it is highly vulnerable, and therefore Colombia seeks to promote integrated management of water resources.

Therefore, Colombia is playing an active part in discussions of these issues in the context of the UN General Assembly, the Economic and Social Council, the Organization of American States, and the World Water Forum, amongst others.

  • The World Water Forum is the most important event in this matter. It is an initiative of the World Water Council, designed to encourage dialogue among the many actors involved, in order to influence the drafting of a global policy that will be congruent with the targets required to achieve sustainable development.
  • The VI World Water Forum was held on March 2012 in France. It adopted a Ministerial Declaration, which highlighted matters such as access to potable water and basic sanitation, the comprehensive management of water resources, the interconnection of water with the various areas of development, foreseeable and sustainable cooperation, amongst other issues.
  • The principal tool for Colombia's public policy on this matter is the National Policy for the Comprehensive Management of Water Resources. Colombia is also conducting an update and adjustment of 130 plans for the regulation and management of hydrographic basins - POM CAS.
