The Caribbean Coast

The Convention for the Protection and Development of the Marine Environment in the Wider Caribbean, or Convention of Cartagena, is a global or umbrella agreement for cooperation and development of the marine environment, setting up a legal framework for regional and national cooperation in the Wider Caribbean.

The Convention has been complemented by three Protocols.

  1. Protocol for Cooperation to Combat Oil Spills in the Wider Caribbean region.
  2. Protocol for Specially Projected Areas and Wildlife (SPAW) in the Wider Caribbean region.
  3. Protocol for Pollution from Land-based Sources (LBS).

Colombia is currently in the process of ratifying the last of these protocols. It believes that this is the most important agreement of its kind, with the inclusion of limits for regional effluents of domestic wastewater.
