Communication at UNESCO

The Communication and Information Sector was established in its present form in 1990. Its programs are rooted in UNESCOS’s constitution, which requires the Organization to promote the “free flow of ideas by word and image.” The Sector consists of:

  • The Communication Development Division
  • Division for Freedom of Expression, Democracy and Peace
  • Information Society Division

The Sector also provides the secretariats for intergovernmental programs:

The three main strategic goals of the sector are:

  • To promote the free flow of ideas and the universal access to information.
  • To promote the expression of pluralism and cultural diversity in the media and in world information networks.
  • To promote the access to Information and Communication Technologies for all.

In addition to the Regular Program, the sector implements various interregional, regional and national projects with funding from external sources in Africa, the Arab States, Asia and the Pacific, Latin America and the Caribbean. Likewise, it works with UN agencies, multilateral development agencies, and regional and international non-governmental agencies.
