Biosphere Reserves

Biosphere reserves are terrestrial and/or marine ecosystems protected by the States and by the World Network of Biosphere Reserves, whose main duty is the preservation of the biodiversity of the planet and its sustainable use. They are laboratories where the integrated management of the land, the water and the biodiversity is studied. The biosphere reserves are part of a World Network in which the States participate voluntarily.

There are five (5) biosphere reserves in Colombia:

Andean Belt

The Andean Belt is located in the Colombian mountain range, to the south of the Andes mountains. The Andean belt includes three national parks: La Cueva de los Guacharros, the Puracé and the Nevado del Huila National Parks.

El Tuparro

It is located in the Eastern area of Colombia, in the Orinoco region of the department of Vichada. The reserve is surrounded by the Tomo river to the north, and by the Caño Maipurés to the south. It is one of the few places where the Pink Dolphin from the Amazon lives.

Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta

It is bordered by the Caribbean sea and by the plains of the Guajira peninsula to the north. It is framed by the Ranchería and the Cesar rivers to the southeast.  It is bordered by the great alluvial plains of the Magdalena river and by the Great Swamp of Santa Marta to the west.
